This week one of the Whitsunday's best bar locations cruised back into existence as Barracudas Oyster Bar and Grill. For five of more years true locals spoke of the fabled "Abels" bar at Abel Point Marina with a slight sigh, for its idealic location overlooking the marina, Pioneer Bay and Woodwark sunsets saw many an ale downed in the days of old.
Without fanfare and open less than 7 days, the first Saturday night saw tables booked out as diners sat down to test a menu dominated by Oyster dishes and other faire priced at around $20.00. Downstairs, the bar area is buzzing. The flat screens flicker away with sporting channels, while drinkers chatter. The deck is also busy where the inquisitive include a few smokers. The operating license has allowed a smoking area that does not socially exclude people requiring a puff, as all get to enjoy the Coral Sea, maritime traffic and passers by on the broad walk.
"There is plenty of passing action", says Henk, joint owner and operator of Barracudas. "Being located at one of Australia's busiest commercial marinas means plenty of boats coming and going, while the foreground presents happy travelers, locals and others on the bicentennial walkway." He's not joking. More than 60 overnight vessels operate from Meridian Marinas Abel Point Marina, along with ferry services and a bare boat fleet over 100.
Despite the instant success, the owners are relaxed about the future for the bar. "If you look at the features, you can see that we are more hotel than bar, " says co-owner Sean, "With casual dining, televisions and the deck there is space for all social types. We also have the option of live music in the future, but we will be watching to see which way we should go." It is easy to see that these guys have plenty of opportunity to provide alternative to the main street establishments. They are also doing group functions and breakfasts providing more dynamic in their trade.
Obviously, everyone is encouraging their success as Barracudas epitomises classic Aussie beach bar... Cold beer, sunshine and perhaps "April Sun" playing in the background. There is no beach, but shhhh.... no one's noticed.
